For my baby (1997) is a provocative psychological drama, a love story and a story of two different generations. In the movie, the European nightmare, the Holocaust, becomes a metaphor for the human dilemma. Tony Award Winner Alan Cumming plays Daniel, the leading character, a young Viennese comedian and son of Holocaust survivors, who struggles to deal with his past. His sister Hannah had died in a concentration camp before he was born and is haunting him, not just in his dreams.
Van den Berg was awarded best director at The Grand Prix of the Dutch Film in 1997 for For my Baby.

Rudolf van den Berg's notes: Back to the big themes. I felt I had to express something urgent at the time. At the opening during the Netherlands Film Festival the film was a big success: tears, nominations, awards etc. But due to a legal battle between me and the producers of the film it took two years before the film was screened in theaters. And film is like fish, you know... I still think it is a good piece of cinema, frightening and tender. Even though I would love to rewrite the script a little bit one day...
