The prize winning documentary Sal Santen Rebel (1983) is an emotional portrait of the Dutch writer and former revolutionary Sal Santen, a Jewish Trotskyite. Sal was an active member of revolutionary movements in various third world countries until 1967, when he, disillusioned, quit his rebel efforts and began to focus on his writings. The film is built upon a dramatic reunion between Sal and his old rebel friend Michel Raptis, who were cellmates after Sal got arrested in 1960 for aiding the Algerian revolutionaries.

Sal Santen Rebel was awarded The Grand Prix of the Dutch Film in 1982 for best documentary and won the first prize at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence in Italy.
